Title
Post-Medieval Hooked Clasp or Havette
Description
English: Copper alloy hooked clasp or havette, Read late medieval to early post-medieval Class A Type 1. A cast double-ended hook of rectangular section with a central block with incised saltire crossed by a central incised line; the pointed hooks projected from the ends at acute angles of c. 45 degrees, one is chipped. The saltire appeared on havettes forming part of the Arms of the Clothworkers Company of London, granted in 1530. Havettes were used to tauten cloth enabling a shearman to shear its nap, and continued in use for longer in the North than elsewhere. One arm is probably straightened while the curve of the other may now be more curved than it was, both possibly damage from the latter use of the object. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1530-1650.

Length: 59.1mm, Width: 8.3mm, Thickness: 5mm, Weight: 9.60gms
