Title
Post-Medieval Strap Fitting
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap fitting, probably from a sword or baldrick belt of Post-Medieval date. It is missing one integral rivet on the back face due to old breaks. It has a flat, circular openwork plate that has moulded relief decoration on the front face. This comprises a man in the moon motif, the ends of the crescent moon curving round to hold in place an openwork star of six points. The face of the man is worn and has a recessed oval shaped eye, a prominent nose and lips. Behind the head and moon is an integrally cast circular suspension loop with circular perforation that shows signs of use wear at its outer edge. The back face is flat and has one integrally cast curved rivet that is oval shaped in section and is positioned behind the star, the opposing rivet behind the head now missing due to old breaks. The entire object has a dark brown/black patina. It measures 25.06mm in height, 35.12mm in width including suspension loop, 2.71mm in thickness, and weighs 6.20g. This is an eye section from a Post-Medieval sword or baldrick belt that would have originally attached to a near identical hooked section. It finds a close parallel in an example from Devon published by Read (2008: no. 805) and a near identical example from Suffolk (SF-3B75D6). This strap fitting dates to the 16th or 17th century AD.
