Post-Medieval sword belt fitting |
||
Description |
English: Post medieval copper alloy mount, probably from a sword belt. This object is identical to (in shape, size and decoration), though slightly more worn than, the mount described in record WILT-08B9E3 from Market Lavington in Wiltshire, and much of this description is based on this record. It weighs 2.66g and measures 28x16x1.5mm.
The widest end is trilobed with part of an iron rivet in situ at the centre. Below this the edges curve inwards twice on both sides with a protruding curved area between. The narrowest end of the mount is rounded. The decoration within the mount is foliate, with leaves branching into the projecting areas of the lobes and the central protuding curved area. As stated by Hinds for WILT-08B9E3, "Given its similarity of the tri-lobed end and foliate decoration to sword belt fittings, this must be associated in some way. However it has neither hook nor eye and only has one rivet hole, at one end - suggesting this might have hung downwards or even swivelled. It seems likely this was a belt mount forming part of a sword belt set, to match with other hooks and eyes." 16th century. |
