Title
Post-medieval : Decade Finger Ring
Description
English: TREASURE CASE : 2010 T417.

A complete gold decade finger ring of post-medieval date.
The finger ring is comprised of a rectangular sectioned hoop with ten knops cast integrally to the exterior at regular intervals. The bezel is a flattened cross-shaped knop.
The interior surface of the hoop is very worn.

Decade rings were used as a form of rosary for repeating Ave and Paternoster prayers and were introduced around the 10th century. While this ring is difficult to date precisely the use of rosary rings became popular during times of religious persecution, particularly in the 16th century, as they were more discrete than rosary beads (PA&TAR, 2007, p.149).
A similar example has been recorded as WAW-CB51A1 (2007-T207).

Dimensions: Weight: 1.4 grams. 20.4mm x 2.5mm x 2.5mm.
