Title |
Post-medieval brooch |
||
Description |
English: A complete, copper alloy disc brooch or dress hook, probably of post-medieval date. The brooch is formed of a flat circular disc and attachment hook riveted to the centre of the reverse.
The front of the brooch is decorated with small pellets organised in five concentric circles. Overlaying this is an image of a crown topped with a cross: the base of the crown is a horizontal rectangle containing three evenly-spaced pellets. From the edges of this rectangular base rise two vertical lines, topped with small circles (the sides of the crown). Between these lines is a triangle, beginning on the rectangular base with the apex in line with the circles. From the centre of the triangle's point rises a single vertical line, topped with a cross. A small distance below the crown is a horizontal line with circular ends, spanning the width of the motif. The reverse of the brooch is decorated with a star-shaped design. The star has nine visible points, each containing two pellets. In between each point on the outside of the star is a single pellet, and there is a ring of small circles on the inside (only five are visible owing to the placement of the attachment hook). The attachment hook obscures large portions of the reverse design, and leaves a clearly-visible off-centre rivet on the front of the brooch. This suggests the disc was reused as a brooch at a later date, perhaps in a similar fashion to reused jetton brooches: SF-8E17DB or YORYM-1A5C4D. Diameter: 22.85mm, weight: 2.78g. |
