Title
Post-medieval buckle: S-shaped buckle
Description
English: A complete copper alloy S-shaped buckle with loop, dating from the post-medieval period. Although often called snake buckles, they actually appear to depict waterfowl, in this case probably swans. The heads form the terminals of the S-shaped buckle, with moulded patterning forming collars enclosing a series of transverse ribs. The collars are flanked on either side by four floral/foliage or "spear-head" motifs. Another possibility is that these mouldings may represent crowns; swans are used in heraldry and can represent loyalty and grace among other things. The surviving attachment loop is sub-rectangular in plan and formed from one piece of copper wire. There would have been an opposing attachment which is now missing. These buckle are attibuted to sword belts of the late 16th and 17th century AD although similar buckles were still used by the military into the late 19th century.
