Title
Post-medieval token
Description
English:

A complete but worn, struck / hammered copper alloy token, issued by the Anglesey Mines (Parys Mining Company) in Anglesey.

Obverse: Hooded druid's head, surrounded by an oak wreath.
Obverse inscription: -
Reverse: Cypher of the Parys Mining Company.
Reverse inscription: [...]

The outer edge is inscribed with the words: PAY ON DEMAND IN LONDON LIVERPOOL OR ANGLESEY

Diameter: 33mm
Thickness: 4mm
Weight: 26.0g

The Anglesey half pennies or 'Druids' were the first copper token coinage to be issued by a company to facilitate the payment of the miners, thereby overcoming the dearth of small change experienced throughout the country, but there might also have been a little personal interest too. Sales of copper were beginning to decrease, and selling Druid tokens to other industrialists was a handy way of increasing turnover.
