Title |
Post Medieval: ‘hawking’ whistle |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy ‘hawking’ whistle of probable post medieval or very early modern date (1500 – 1800). The whistle is irregular (broadly cylindrical) in plan and circular in cross section. It has been badly corroded and has also been abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The mouth of the whistle is slight tapered and there is an oval (tear-drop shaped) opening just beneath the mouth. The base of the whistle is open and tapered towards the base. The body is decorated with a series of incised turned lines which decorate the middle of the whistle and the base. The whistle also expands and tapers along its length, however the central hole seems to be regular along its entire length. The whistle measures 38.2mm length, is 8.1mm in diameter (with an internal diameter of 4.4mm) and weighs 6.95 grams.
The whistle is a mid beige green colour with a deep well formed patina which has been both corroded and abraded A number of whistles have been recorded by the PAS, however a direct parallel has not been found. It is likely that the dating of this whistle falls within the period 1500-1800. |
