English: Encrusted iron adze of probable post medieval date (1550-1750). The adze is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a splayed blade at one end and rounded butt at the other. The butt is finished with a cylindrical projection which may have acted as a hammer. From this projecting butt the axe expands forming a relatively straight sided blade which flares at the base forming a crescent shaped blade. In profile the adze tapers from a thickened butt to the cutting edge. The adze is pierced just below the butt with the shaft hole which is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and regular in width. A wooden handle or shaft would have been inserted to make the too useable. A number of similar adzes have been recorded on the PAS database and have been dated to the same post medieval period. There is no evidence for it dating to earlier Roman, or Medieval periods. Adzes are a relatively common carpentry tool, used for trimming planks. The adze is a mid brown colour with an encrusted surface which has laminated in places revealing a dark purple brown coloured metal. The adze measures; 110.4mm length, 54.1mm width at blade, 32.9mm width at butt is 8.5mm thick at blade, and 25.1mm thickness at butt. The adze weighs 321 grams. The internal shaft hole measures 16.5mm length, 11.5mm width. The loop has an external diameter of 16.5mm and internal diameter of 9.8mm.
