Title
Post Medieval Buckle (Profile, front and reverse)
Description
English: A cast copper alloy and gilded Post Medieval Buckle dating to circa AD 1750-1850.

The body of the object is broadly 'D' shaped in profile with a triangular point at the apex. There are semi-circular facets along the edge of the frame and at the lower edge which forms part of a large singular loop. The axis bar is slightly off-set from the upper edge of the buckle frame. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded lion's head which is convex in profile. The reverse of the buckle has two concave circles corresponding to the reverse of the lion's head. The fitting has been bent and distorted potentially in the plough soil. The object has a dark grey coloured patina with area of gilding visible on the surface.

The object was perhaps used as a sliding strap fitting and is similar to other military sword belt buckles recorded on the database. There are others recorded on the database (SUR-329DB4) was discovered in Surrey, (WMID-FCEDB5) discovered on the Isle of Anglesey is a double looped example and suggested as having an 18th century date for this buckle type. These buckles apparently have a naval or military significance, being found on HMS Innocence (from the second half of the 18th century), and in Spanish colonial military occupation sites in America, dating 1808 to 1814.

The fitting measures 41.34mm in length, 33.33mm in width, 7.51mm in thickness and it weighs 19.9 grams.
