Post Medieval toy dreidel |
||
Description |
English: A lead alloy Post Medieval toy; a Jewish dreidel or teetotum spinner probably dating from the 18th or 19th century. It is a rectangular cross-sectioned rod of lead alloy from which project four fins, each with a straight top and a curved side and base, forming quarter of an ellipse. The lower end of the rod is curved to one side, probably post-depositional damage. The fins have been squashed together into two pairs, so they now appear as a single shield shaped plate. There are markings on the visible surfaces in raised relief that probably represent the initials of the phrase, Nes Gadol Haya Sham (a Great Miracle Happened There): N (nicht, nothing) Nun, G (all) Gimmel, H (halb, half) Hey, S (stell ein, put in) Shin. The toy would have been used in gambling games, with the letters instructing the player how many tokens to take or put in. The toy is 31mm long, 21.6mm wide and 6.6mm thick. 12.92g.
