Post medieval: Man in the moon mount / strap fitting / hooked tag |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast copper alloy openwork mount or hooked tag of Early Post Medieval dating.
The mount is sub circular in plan, with a integrally cast projecting hook on one side. It would have originally been one of a pair, with its partner having an integrally cast loop to recieve the hook. The decoration on the front consists of a Crescent moon, with a face present, looking towards a six pointed star. The hook extends from the star. The back of the mount is plain and undecorated. It measures 39.1mm in length, 23.71mm wide and 2.52mm thick. It weighs 4.9 grams. The mount is mid green to dark brown in colour with an abraded surface patina. Abrasion has occurred due to movement whilst within the plough soil and has resulted in a loss of some of the surface detail and patina. These mounts are thought to represent the Man in the Moon, and are possibly from a sword bell or baldrick. An published example is present in Read, 2008, p224, #805 and has been dated to c.16th to 17th Centuries AD. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database either as mounts or strap fittings as HAMP-1C48B4, SUSS-2E08A5, NMS-26F8C0. A complete paired example has been recorded as NARC-6ECFD1. Reference: |
