Description
English: Date: 17th c.

Description: Fede ring - flat band with undulating peaks and troughs to create a snake-like appearance. The bezel is two hands clasped and crowned with what appears to be a fleur-delys. Traces of gilding are visible on the exterior and interior surfaces. A crack is present on the shoulder to the right of the bezel. The hoop is slightly misshapen.

Discussion: Fede (Italian meaning 'faith') rings were a popular love token ttom 12th century and remained so well into 19th century. The hands joined symbolised the love and faith between two people and often you fmd sitting between the hands a heart. Metal content: The precious metal content fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%. N. Awais-Dean The British Museum 05.07.07
