She reached her husbands bedside about 6 oclock thatevening, by a special train provided her. Dr. D. W. Bliss took chargeof the case, selecting as his associates Dr. J. K. Barnes, Surgeon-Generalof the army; Dr. J. J. Woodward, also of the army, and Dr. RobertReyburn. The following day Dr. D. Hayes Agnew, of Philadelphia,and Dr. Frank H. Hamilton, of New York, were called in for consulta-tion and advice. CRYSTAL FALLS.—YELLOWSTONE VALLEY. 128 PRESIDENTS, SOLDIERS, STATESMEN. over the Ian<l where preparations were in progress for the celebration ofthe nations natal anniversary, they were suspended, and the Fourth olJuly, 1881, was probably the gloomiest in our history. The excitementwas more intense probably because the attempted assassination was gener-ally supposed to be an indirect result of what was termed the spoils system,or an inordinate thirst of office-seeking, and the bitter antagonism that hadbeen engendered between the so-called Stalwarts, and the friends of theAdministration, a division that had grown out of the controversy over theappointments in the State of New York. This outburst of sorrow, griefand indignation overleaped the bounds of partisan prejudice, and the entirepeople, embracing all parties and factions, North and South, from everycorner of the Republic, deplored the monstrous crime, and united in thenational lamentation.
