They are also convinced that thesame simplicity of style is better adaptedto the student of scientific agriculture.Acknowledgment is made to those whohave assisted us in any way in the pro-duction of this work, and especially tothe breeders who have permitted us touse photographs of famous dairy animalsfor illustrations. Dr. S. M. BabcockInventor of the Babcock Test PROFITABLE DAIRYING soil of his farm growing richer and more productive. All of thesescmewhat surprising assertions admit of absolute proof and will befully discussed in the chapters which follow. But the farmer who reads this must neither think it an over-drawn case for dairy farming en the one hand, nor imagine on theother hand that all he has to do is get a few cows and that they willtake care of him for the rest of his days. Both positions are equallyerroneous. No man can permanently succeed in any undertakingwithout putting intelligent thought and energy into his work. Neithercan the dairy farmer. The ability to secure profits from dairying lies in a thoroughknowledge of its fundcmental principles. It is hoped that the infor-mation contained in this little bock will be of value to the farmerswho may chance to read it, in that it endeavors to set these principlesforth in a simple and practical way.
