THE MURDER OF SCARPIA ACT II ment, Tosca contrives to secure the dagger from the table, and as Scarpia approaches togive it to her and then take her in his arms, she stabs him, crying that thus she gives him the kiss he desired. In a prolonged and highly dra-matic scene she takes the paper from Scarpias dead fingers, then washes her hands in a bowl on the table, places the two can-dles at the dead mans head and the cross on his bosom, then goes out, turning for a last look at the lifeless body as the curtain falls.
