Mario, in response to his friends appeal for assist-ance, hastily closes the outer door, and conceals Angelottiin the chapel, just as Toscas voice is heard impatientlydemanding admittance. „ ^ He admits her, but is anxious and ill at ease, fearingto intrust even Tosca with so dangerous a secret, but shenotices his preoccupation and is somewhat piqued becausehe is not as attentive as usual. She is at first jealous andasks him if he is thinking of another woman; but soon re-pents, and in the charming love scene which follows en-deavors to smooth his brow by planning an excursion forthe morrow. She sings of the delights of the proposed visit to thevilla, and the romantic forest where they will wander andforget the cares and troubles of their professional life.
