ARKAR AS TOSCA The Story Tosca is Puccinis fifth opera, and by farthe most popular, next to Mme. Butterfly, whichprobably holds first place in the affections ofopera-goers. The opera is a remarkable exampleof Puccinis skill in adjusting both instrumentaland voice effects to the sense of the story, in-terpreting both the characters and the situations. The plot is gloomy and intensely tragic, fol-lowing closely the Sardou melodrama, but is re-lieved somewhat by the beauty of the musicalsetting, which confirmed Puccinis place in thefirst rank of modern operatic composers. Thethree acts of the opera are crowded with sensa-tional events and highly dramatic situations. The work has neither introduction nor over-ture. The first scene occurs in the church ofSan Andrea, where the painter, Mario Cavaradossi,is at work on the mural decorations.
