supplied. The habits of the bird, says the correspondent, induce contem-plative thoughts in the mind of the wanderer : for he could leavethe din and smoke of London behind him, and reclining under theshade of a wide-spreadiDg tree, see a bright group of parti-colouredmagpies strutting before him, while overhead he heard the soothingvoices of the rooks. Nevertheless, magpies and rooks are cheatsand thieves : love them as we may, we cannot deny them their littlepeccadilloes. Still we sympathise with the correspondent ; andsympathising, bid him take comfort. For though every roguish rookand magpie should be exterminated from Kensington Gardens, doesnot there still remain for him the consolation of Westminster Halland the Stock Exchange ? THE SILENT SY5TEIU. Lord Stanley is employing the leisure he has since he has been in theHouse of Lords in editing a new edition of Tacitus. It will be dedicatedto Sir James Graham, out of compliment to his taciturnity on the openingof letters question.
Text Appearing After Image:
GRATTAN THE GOOSE. ver and anon, Mr. Grattan, of theConciliation Hall, reminds us of theHons-head that frequently adonis aletter-box. He has a fierce look—lias his mouth always agape, withreally nothing coming out of it. Thefollowing is one of his latest nothings. He said OConnell had beentaunted for not appearing in hisplace in Parliament; but he who hadshoulders strong enough to bear the weightof monarchs, could hardly feel theweight of those pigmy dwarfs whomight perch upon him. A capital phrase, that, pigmydwarfs! But then, no man canbetter employ the tautology of smallness than Mr. Grattan. Thatthe Irish Members should, in the greatness of their sulks, keep awayfrom Parliament, reminds us of the magnanimity of the idiot, quotedby Johnson, who when sorely offended—went out and slept uponthe bridge all night.
