Text Appearing Before Image:
on their banner must beerased to make room for Portugal Street, whichmust soon be the watchword of this unhappy regiment. Already do we see in our minds eye through our intel-lectual spectacles, a long and mournful cavalcade of theBlues going in procession to take the benefit of that Act,whose name is whispered in Whitecross Street, mutteredin the Bench, and Caught faintly by echo in Fleet as it fell. No longer will they be able to repel the hostile attack, butyielding to an incessant fire of parchment, they will beforced to surrender to the gallant officers who constitutethe great effective corps of bombs, in the service of theSheriff. We understand that the revelations made before themilitary board empowered to inquire into the insolvencyof the Blues are of the most humiliating and painfulcharacter; the following extract from the unpublishedevidence will throw some light upon it:— Policeman JE, deposed that he had been employed towatch the barracks where the Blues were quartered.
Text Appearing After Image:
WHOS AFRAID ? OR, THE OREGON QUESTION. PUNCH, OR THE LONDON CHARIVARI. ig; Looked in at the window and saw several of the soldiers with unpaidhills hcfore them, tearing the hair frantically off their helmets.Observed one of the sergeants send out a picquet, consisting ofone mau, with several pairs of boots and some swords. Watchedthe picquet to the pawnbrokers. Saw the pawnbroker relieving theguard. This was done by the pawnbroker relieving the guard ofthe load he had got with him. Witness is sure the soldier laid downhis arms: immediately after which, the swords were all drawn—upa spout, and witness saw no more of them. Among the other evidence will be found that of one of the soldiers, whose testimony unfortunately removes all possibility of doubt asto the insolvent condition of the regiment ; the trooper states, thatinstead of the officers having a mess to themselves, the regiment haslong been in a mess altogether. That he, the trooper, has oftenmounted guard on nothing but a bake
