receives a su :^ent rainfallto enable cultivation to be carried on, but the country we? of Lahorehas only a slight rainfall, owing to the fact that the two Indian mon-soons become exhausted by the time they pass over it. Culti-vation would be impossible were it not for irrigation. Between theriver valleys are extensive plains of an arid character, which onlyrequire a regular supply of water to turn them into fertile andflourishing regions. The irrigation works undertaken in the Punjab areIrrigation. probably the most important that have ever been constructed in any part of the world, and, what ismore, they have proved to be very remunerative to the Governmentand a great boon to the population. The area irrigated by the productive works has increased between1901 and 1911 by 2,700,000 acres, and the percentage of net revenueon the capital outlay has shown a steady increase during the last 10years, as will be seen in the following table :—■ IRRIGATION DEPARTMENT, PUNJAB.GENERAL MAP.
