Description: Caption: Quarantine barricade around houses in Hawthorne Street, Woolloongabba, Brisbane, Queensland. The first case of the bubonic plague occurred on the 27 April, 1900. The origin of the outbreak in Queensland was traced to an infection carried by rats arriving in Queensland ports aboard vessels from Sydney, at a time when the plague was known to exist there. The infection spread to local rats then to humans. [Information taken from Report on Plague in Queensland, 1900-1907 by B. Burnett Ham, Brisbane, 1907].
