Text Appearing Before Image:
il.—During the meeting of the BritishAssociation in Leeds last September there was an exhibitionof microscopes and microscopic objects at one of the soirees, •when I showed the circulation of the blood in the tail of asmall gold fish, using for that purpose a trough inventedand made by INIr. T. Walker, a surgeon of this town. The trough appeared at the time to excite some attentionfrom its convenience and efficiency, and as I have sincereceived several applications on the subject, I am inducedto think that a description of it may be of service to some ofthe readers of the Journal. As a proof of its efficiency, I may mention, that only onefish was used during the evening, and that, although it waskept for more than three hours under observation, it sus-tained no injury, and is still living. The trough consistsof a piece of plate glass (a b c d), about six inches long, and two inches wide; upon this three pieces of plate glass, about half an inch wide (e b, b d), and d h, are cemented

with marine glue. Three pieces of strong covering glass?about a quarter of an inch wide (e f, f g), and g h, are alsocemented on to the plate. A piece of moderately strongcovering glass (e, f, g, h,) is then cemented on to the top ofthe thin slips, and a piece of plate glass (e h) cemented tothe top of the thin glass( e f g h), and abutting on the ends ofthe slips E b, H D. The whole then forms an bpen trough (e b ii d) , termi-nating in a cell (e f g h), which is closed everywhere exceptwhere it communicates with the bottom of the trough at theline EH. The fish, wrapped in a little wet linen, is placed itf the 114 MEMORANDA. trough, so that the tail lies in the cell e f g h, a smallquantity of Avater is placed in the trough, and the fish keptin its place by one or two elastic bands or strips of thin sheetlead passing round the glass, and over the body of the fish. The advantages of this arrangement are— 1st. The fish cannot throw up his tail and splash theobject-glass with water. 2
