Summary edit

Description
English: This photograph shows the collapse of the chimney by a thunderstorm at the Queensgate Whiting Works on Beckside during the night of 15th June, 1907. The chimney was 75 feet high and 54 years old and was brought to the ground crashing through the roof of the packing shed. It had to be totally demolished and rebuilt.

In the 19th century several whiting works were established near Queensgate to exploit the local chalk. Whiting was made from crushed chalk, which, when mixed with linseed oil, was the basis for putty.
