ely after the operation, and his voice, to some extent, soon returned. Four months later, however, he died from exhaustion andpressure. Autopsy confirmed the diagnosis, but, strangely enough, notrace of the wire could be found in any part of the clot. The third case occurred in a woman aged 50, and involved thethoracic aorta just below its descending portion. Erosion of the ribswas noted upon the left side, so that the sac projected to the extent oftwo inches outside of the line of the body between the vertebrae and thelower third of the left scapula. Nine feet of wire were introduced andthe current passed as in the preceding case, from 5 to 50 ma. during aperiod of three-quarters of an hour. The immediate effect of the opera-tion was to diminish the expansile pulsation. At the end of four months, however, the patient died from pressure symptoms and exhaustion. Theautopsy confirmed the diagnosis and revealed the wire embedded in thecentre of the clot. Therapeutic Gazette, July 25, 1905.

Fig. 52.—Ozone inhalation. The generator should be 8usi)ended to within a few inches fromthe mouth of the patient, and attached to the positive pole of the machine. The patient is placedupon an insulated platform connected with the negative jjole. The oxj-gen of the air confined withinthe globe is broken up, forming ozone, by the convective discharge of the current passing from thenumerous points of the brush within. It is of paramount value where sprays or medicated vaporscannot reach the part by other means. CHAPTER IX APPLICATIONS IN THE SPECIALTIES. I. Rhinology and Laryngology. Atrophic Rhinitis. In atrophic rhinitis, Delavan^ suggests the application of the nega-tive pole to the retro-nasal space, and the positive pole to the nape of theneck. The strength of the galvanic or faradic current should be from 4to 6 milliamperes. Each treatment should last from 5 to 12 minutes. Theapplications should be made every other day. Pharyngitis.
