to 234 show anumber of radiograms from a case of this kind, where the earliest mani-festation of disease was seen in the neck, below the epiphyseal line. Theclinical course and result of treatment was precisely similar to that of atuberculous infection of the joint. Marked evidence of bone disease in thevicinity of, but not involving, a joint, is rather an indication for a diagnosisof a non-tuberculous origin for the disease. A typical case may occur inthe upper end of the femur, when an area of lessened shadow (i.e. a conditionwhich allows of the readier passage of the rays through the bone substance)is due to a destructive process in the bone, with absorption of the bonysalts. This is accompanied by a greatly thickened periosteum. The bone,therefore, appears on examination to be denser in the surrounding areas,in contradistinction to the general rarefaction which is so frequently seenin chronic cases of tuberculosis.
