actual paralysis existed, and the electrical re-actions of the muscles were good, although there was slight dim-inution in response to the induced current. For several monthsbefore I saw her she had lain upon her back, with her feet drawnup%nd her knees bent, and it was only with difficulty that herlower extremities could be fully extended. Believing the case tobe one of hysteria, I at once isolated her and she was systemati-cally treated by mental therapeutics and properly disciplined, withthe result that in a few months she was up and about and appar-ently perfectly well. Other cases are harder to manage and slower to im-prove, and if there be combined injuries, the prognosismay be exceedingly bad. In a very small number thecondition following mixed neurasthenia and hysteria isan absolutely permanent one, but in the experience ofmany years the writer can recall but one case of this in-curable kind in which there were directly produced cerebral PLATE XV. Case LV.—This man was employed in shifting grain in oneof the cars of the Erie Raihoad, and when so engaged wasthrown to the floor, as the result of a colHsion of the car he wasin with a wild car ahead. He was much frightened, very cold,and had a weak, fluttering pulse. Upon his return to his home hetook to his bed and made no effort to move or help himself.Within a short time he developed a fine tremor, which increasedwhen he tried to take a glass or cup offered him, or used his knifeor fork; this ceased when he was undisturbed. His legs were cold and insensitive, and his wife brought and applied an elec-tric battery which he thought helped him.
