. Thissettles to the bottom when everything becomes quiet in theboiler, and, as one can readily understand, displaces the waterfrom the iron, and naturally receives the first heat when fireis again started. The scale immediately in contact is bakedon the iron, while the remainder, by the agitation of thewater, will be held in suspension and again be ready to settlewhen circulation ceases. Now, it will be readily understood that the thickness of thescale increases day by day by the same process as at firstuntil it becames so thick and hard that, in order to generatesteam, the fire must be forced, which results in a greatlyincreased fuel consumption and the ruinous overheating ofthe iron. We all know that incrustation and scale arevery poor conductors of heat- Various estimates have beenmade of the loss of fuel due to the presence of scale in theboiler, the lowest of which is as follows: *By William Olsen, supervisor of boiler cleaning, MotivePower Department, New York Central Railroad.

From the New York Journal. Cooper-Hewitt Illumination of Erecting Shop. 408 RAILWAY MASTER MECHANIC October, 1909. Percent. For 1/16 inch 15 For % inch 50 For y2 inch 120 and so on. Still another matter of cost, resulting directly from thepresence of scale, is that of repairs. When all these expensesare combined the amount chargeable to scale in the boiler isappalling. And it is not alone the additional expense forfuel and repairs that results from scale but the boiler israpidly weakened. Another serious cause of trouble in steam boilers is internalcorrosion. This is not as common as incrustation, but, whenit occurs, it is one of the most dangerous evils with whichboiler owners and engineers have to contend. Its cause isnow generally understood, and is looked upon by engineers,or the men in charge, as a matter of course; that is, that itmust exist to a greater or less extent, on the theory thatcorrosion is rust, and that it is but natural for water to causerust by coming in contact wi
