This was decided upon becauseit was thought that greater economy could be secured byutilizing the surplus heat contained in the gases for pre-heating the air required for combustion. This is believedto be the first instance in which an air preheater has beenused on a locomotive. The smokebo-x is divided into two portions by a transversediaphragm which causes the gases to pass down and throughthe air heater before going to the stack. This heater whichis located beneath the smokebo.x contains 650 longitudinalbrass tubes, 1.3 in. outside diameter, 8 ft. 11^4 in. longand with a heating surface of 1,787 sq. ft. The gases leavethe boiler tubes at about 610 deg. F. and are cooled to about300 deg. F. in passing through the air heater while the airfor combustion is raised to about 300 deg. F.
