nd in 1515 he was appointedinspector of antiquities in succession toFra Giocondo of Verona. He had to paintscenery and to design medals and plans;and on one occasion he was actuallycalled upon to paint a life-size elephanton the walls of the Vatican! Yet, with all these absorbing occupa-tions he found time to model several re-liefs for the Chigi tomb in the Chigi PLATE VIII.—PORTRAIT OF RAPHAEL Though much restored and over-painted—and not by themost competent hands—the portrait of Raphael in the Sala delPittori at the Uffizi, the Walhalla of pictorial fame, is undoubtedly-painted by the master himself, at the age of about twenty-three,when his features had lost none of the almost girlish charm anddelicacy of which we are told by contemporary writers. In timethe portrait stands midway between Timoteo Vitis charming draw-ing of his apprentice, the boy Raphael, at the Oxford UniversityGalleries, and Sebastiano del Piombos portrait of the Prince ofPainters at the Buda-Pesth Museum.

Hefurnished the architectural designs of theVilla Madama for Giulio dei Medici (after-wards Clement VII.) and several otherpalaces in Rome, and also for the daintyPalazzo Pandolfini in Florence, where thealternating arched and triangular pedi-ments are for the first time introducedin secular Renaissance architecture. Hefurnished the engraver Marcantonio Rai-mondi of Bologna with designs like thefamous Judgment of Paris. He plannedand began an elaborate Cosmography ofRome; and yet in the midst of all hisvaried labours he found leisure to scribblesome ardent love sonnets on his sheets ofdrawings.
