In the ever popular Madonna della Sedia, at the Pitti Palace,we have pure Raphael, and also in themasterpiece known as the Madonna diFoligno, which was painted for the Popes PLATE VII.—PUTTO WITH GARLAND The fresco of a puttOt now at the Academy of St. Luca inRome, is the only fragment that is left to the world of all thedecorative work executed by Raphael for the corridor leading fromthe famous Stanze of the Vatican to the Belvedere. It probablybelonged to a shield bearing the papal arms, and is a graceful andcharacteristic example of the masters treatment of the form ofchildren which he loved to introduce into his compositions.

RAPHAEL 6i Chamberlain Sigismondi dei Conti, for hisfamily chapel in the church of Ara Coeliin 1512, in commemoration of this dignitarysescape from a bursting fireball, as is indi-cated by the meteor in the landscape back-ground. This picture was subsequentlyremoved to Sigismondos birthplace Foligno,whence it was carried off by the Frenchin 1797, but had to be eventually restored,and is now among the treasures of theVatican.
