Description
English: This photograph depicts a group of men and a film crew on board SS SIERRA. The photograph was taken in August 1929 at Circular Quay during the welcoming and celebrations of the arrival of Australia's first Movietone News truck. The man standing behind the camera is a Sydney cameraman, Ray Vaughan, who had just spent time at Fox Studios in the US. The man standing second from the right is William Szarka of Stanmore, who was the Director of Hoyts Theatre in about 1932.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872-1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the romantic age of sail and two world wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
