Description
Hy is in Engeland Jacob Wainwright genoem en was 'n draer by Livingstone se begrafnis.
English: Wood from the tree under which Dr Livingstone died (May 4th 1873) framed piece of wood with printed paper label- "WOOD from the tree under which Dr David Livingstone died, and under which his heart was buried. Certified (handwritten) Harry Johnson - LMS Missionary Central Africa - 1896 to 1907"
Livingstone Souvenir: A piece of wood
Dr Livingstone died at Chitambo's village, Ilala, at the South end of Lake Bangweolo, on May 4th 1873. The tree under which he died, and under which his heart was buried was a mupunda tree (often called mvula tree). The inscription was cut into the tree by one of Livingstone's carriers, a mission trained boy named Yamuza, called in England Jacob Wainwright. He was a pall-bearer at Livingstone's funeral. Years later he died at our mission station at Urambo [west of Tabora, Tanganyika], and was buried by Mr Walter Draper, L.M.S. Missionary. The Livingstone tree was cut down in 1899, by Mr Codrington, and after a few pieces of wood had been saved for the Livingstone family and others, the tree was destroyed by fire. The inscription is now placed in the museum of the Royal Geographical Society. On the site of the tree an obelisk of concrete has been erected, together with a brass late suitably inscribed. Dr Livingstone's mummified body was interred in the nave of Westminister Abbey on April 18th 1874, so his body lies in the heart of England, and his heart in the heart of Africa.
