h red velvet is worn overa dress of pale yellow. A white coif hides her hair, after thefashion then prevalent among Jewish women. A mild light glanceson the border of the robe, the top of the hat, the book, and thehand resting upon it, in which every wrinkle is carefully reproduced. The relation of this cold light to the coloured shadows is renderedwith absolute truth, and the deep purple of the mantle forms abeautiful harmony with the gray tints of the fur, and of the neutralbackground against which the figure is set.
