BAPTISM OF THE EUNUCH. (Engraved by J. van Vleit, in 1631, after a picture by Rembrandt.) and the problematical nature of the theme adds to its interest. Theimpasto is moderately fat in the lights, the touch precise and mellow, 54 REMBRANDT light and easy, the colour most harmonious. The delicately modelledhead of the old man is full of expression, and the neutral lilac tones othis furred robe are well attuned to the pale green of his tunic. Thesecool tones relieve the russet tints of the grotto walls with its climbingplants, and the general harmony is full of distinction. A drawing in redchalk at the Hermitage shows that Rembrandt made careful prepara-tion for this picture. It is marked by the same easy elegance thatdistinguishes the St. Terome drawing, and belongs to about thesame period. Landscape, as we have seen, plays but a secondary part in theworks of Rembrandt so far. The picture in which it has figuredmost prominently hitherto is the Baptism of the Eunuch, where itsfeeblenes
