STUDY FROM NATURE (PIGS). Pen drawing (M. Léon Bonnat), Museum (No. 1571 in the catalogue). In the latter, the cloak and capwere unfortunately re-painted by De Pesne in the last century. Rembrandts portraits of old women generally show his powers attheir greatest, and the fine example in the Hermitage, known asRembrandts Mother, fully bears out this assertion. I am at a loss tounderstand why the signature and the date 1643 upon it shouldhave been called in question. Both seem to me obviously genuine.I am inclined, however, to reject the title. The type is certainly notthat familiar to us in the masters youthful etchings and paintings.1 1 The model in this portrait of 1643 (a date confirmed by the handling) is, in fact,younger than Rembrandts mother as she appears in the early works.
