The oldcouple, informed of Marys approach, hasten to meet her.Zacharias, a venerable man with a long white beard, hurriesdown the steps in front of his house with the help of a boyon whom he leans for support. Elizabeth has outstripped him,staff in hand; and embraces her cousin, gazing at her with tenderreverence. The young girl submits to her caresses in someconfusion at the honour with which she is received. Theskilfully grouped figures are surrounded by the picturesque disorderof a farm yard, with climbing plants and scattered animals, agoose, some fowls, a peacock on a wall. Pans (France) MANOAHS PRAYER 267 falls full on the two women, the central group of the cheerfulscene, and the spectators attention is at once riveted on them.Elizabeths somewhat sombre dress, and the shadow cast onher face by her yellowish wimple, accentuate the brilliant figureof the Virgin, the flower-like freshness and harmony of hermany-tinted garments, the sweet refinement of her innocent face,and the delicate bloom of a complexion pink and transparent as abriar-rose. In 1641 Rembrandt executed a more important work, the ManoaksPrayer in the Dresden Gallery. The subject was one to which hewas anxious to do justice, for he made two preliminary drawings forthis picture ; one is in the Stockholm Print-room, the other in theBerlin Museum. The composition in the former, the more finishedand elaborate of the two, agrees with that of the picture.
