About 1640 (B. 369). the two things dearest to him on earth, his work and his wife, thatloving companion who anticipated his every wish, and shared hisjoys and his sorrows. Unhappily, Saskias health had given himgreat cause for anxiety for some time past. Her strength had beenseverely taxed by the birth of several children. She had lost her 2Ô2 REMBRANDT eldest son, who was born at the end of 1635. A daughter, bornon July 1, 1638, was baptised at the Oude Kerk on July 22 of thefollowing year, by the name of Cornelia, after Rembrandts mother.But this child too had died, and on July 29, 1640, a second littledaughter was given the same name, in the presence of Frans Copaland Titia van Uylenborch. This child in her turn passed away amonth later, and was buried August 24, 1640, in the Zuider Kerk,which had become the parish church of the family on their change ofdwelling.
