The last banquet I was able to attend—in the spring of 1892■—-was given in honor of Whitelaw Reid on his return toAmerica after serving his country as Ambassador to France.It was the largest and most brilliant banquet the Club hadgiven up to that time, and the pre-eminence of America inthe art of post-prandial oratory was demonstrated anew.
