Sir: In compliance with section 3 of an act of Congress approvedMarch 3, 1891, entitled An act for the protection of the lives ofminers in the Territories, I beg leave to submit herewith the six-teenth annual report of this office, covering the fiscal vear ended June30, 1909. INTRODUCTION. PRODUCTION AND PROSPECTS. Only an insignificant part of the coal areas of New Mexico has beendeveloped, and this development has been confined largely to thecoking-coal fields of Colfax County, which produced 2,027,639.68tons, or 74.85 percent of the total net tonnage of the Territory, duringthe last fiscal year. About one-third of the coal mined in ColfaxCounty, or 761,559.05 tons of unwashed coal and slack, was shippedto the washeries and used in the manufacture of coke; 1,266,080.63tons of coal and 38
