Text Appearing Before Image:
before their walls sobered thefickle Greeks for a moment, and there seemed to be someprospect of a peaceful settlement. But presently the moreviolent party got the upper hand, and an embassy was sentfrom Tarentum to Pyrrhus, king of Kpirus, inviting him toappear in Italy as the champion of the Greek cities againstthe Roman barbarian. Pyrrhus readily responded to theappeal, and having sent one of his officers, named Milo, totake the direction of affairs in Tarentum, he began to makepreparations for the invasion of the peninsula. Pyrrhus Pyrrhus is perhaps the most interesting personality amongthe many able men who strove to carve out kingdoms forthemselves in the dismembered empire of Alexander. OfGreek blood, he traced his descent from the great nationalhero, Achilles. His childhood was passed at the court ofGlaucias, king of Illyria, to whose care he had been consignedby faithful domestics when the prince of Macedon, who haddefeated and slain his father, was aiming at his life.
