of a very unusual intellectual quality. And this expression of opinion is fairly representa-tive of the comments of our American newspapers. In England the critics were much less complimentary. 522 THE RE^IE^V OF REyiE(VS, They were disposed to regard the features of the composite gentleman as simply expressive of a benevolentimbecility. Sir William Harcourt was the captain ofthe big-headed men, and he had as his colleagues Mr.Fowler, Mr. Mundella and Mr. Campbell-Bannerman.The third group, with Mr, Morley at its head, con-sisted of Lord Herschell, Mr, Shaw-Lefevre and LordRipon. The fourth, or Lord Spencers group, includedMr. Bryce, Lord Kimberley and Sir George Trevel-yan. Having got these four composite groups, theywere all combined, and then Mr. Gladstones portraitwas photographed upon the whole. For purposes ofcomparison, we have thought well to use again, insmaller space, the final resulting portrait as published last month.
