©bjE. Muller. Jr.. N. V. ONE OF OUR LATEST COLLIERS. U. S. S. JUPITER The submarine is blind. It cannot \vorkat night. A Zeppehn can make long flights; but itis so noisy that auditory detectors can alwaysforewarn its approach. It can also be over-taken and destroyed bv the swifter and more agile aeroplane. TheZeppelin is too cumber-some to be dependableeyes for a fleet. Like thehawk, the Zeppelin willalways be a bird of smallprey. Neither the sub-marine nor the Zeppelin canever carrj enough torpedoesto act independent of ahome base. Neither cancarry thick armor-plate todefend themselves. Theyare fearfully frail in mak-ing, an attack. Such is the briefest out-line of some of the newthings Uncle Sams new Navy will em-body. Personally, I think he is going to gethis moneys worth—certainly a great dealmore in returns than he gets for hisspendings on liquor and chewing-gum andcandv.
