THE AMERICAN REVIEW OF REVIEWS couldhardly be expected to judge with severity anyliterary performance by its founder and its mentor, Mr.W. T. Stead. But certainly no prepossessions in favor ofthe author are needed to find that Mr. Steads latestachievement is one of the most admirable and one of themost brilliant feats of what may be termed literaryjournalism that any man of our day has ever accom-plished. In England it is somewhat customary formonthly and weekly periodicals to issue in December aspecial number, as novel and as attractive as its publisherscan invent, usually containing more profuse illustrationsthan the regular issues.
