There arefew chapters in which one does not find the excitementof a duel, a battle, scalping-party, or some equallythrilling incident. Mr. Edward Bellamy, the famous author of LookingBackward, had written The Duke of Stockbridge(Silver, Burdett & Co.) even before the book that madehim so well known. In fact, it is said that LookingBackward grew out of this romance. Shortly before hisrecent death, Mr. Bellamy authorized the publicationof the novel. It deals with the great revolt of thedebtor-farmers of Massachusetts against the laws whichdealt so severely with them in 1786. An officer of theContinental army, who led the revolt, is the hero ofthe narrative, and his love with a belle of WesternMassachusetts makes a pretty story.
