The mUd temper of the monarch soughtnot to take advautage of the defeated mob or to destroy what was no longer dangerous.Pardon was freely granted, and the revolt wasat an end.

It soon appeared, however,that his recent display of courageous viituehad been pressed out by the emergency, andthat his moral nature was exhausted by thesudden drain. His unkiugly qualities againbecame conspicuous, and his disqualificationfor the work of governing was more and moremanifest. A short time after the suppressionof Wat Tylers rebellion the king revoked thecharters which he had granted, and that stateof half-serfdom called vilkmage, under whichthe English had groaned since the days of theConquest, was restored. Meanwhile the kingsuncle, the Duke of Lancaster, continued toprosecute his schemes of ambition. His mar-riage with Constantia, daughter of Pedro theCruel of Castile, and the usurpation of theCastilian crown by Henry of Trastamare,furnished old John of Gaunt with an admi-rable prete
