English: Mauser GEW Model 1896 bolt action rifle, Anglo Boer War This was one of three Boer rifles collected by 457 Sergeant Charles E Clews, 2NZMR Model- M96 bolt action rifle; 7x57mm calibre; internal magazine; two barrel bands, one with sling swivel; rear sling swivel on butt; name OLIVIER carved on right hand side of butt; bolt has mismatched number; magazine spring and magazine platform at fault missing parts- cleaning rod; rear sight range slider markings- serial number on bolt- 3221 safety catch carrier- 36 on left hand side of body- A8386 MOD. MAUSER 1896. - LUDW. LOEWE and Co. BERLIN. magazine platform plate- 86 fitting in front of magazine platform plate- A8386 manufacturer Ludw. Loewe and Co Berlin, 1896

Mauser GEW Model 1896 bolt action rifle From South African War, 1899-1902. (Used by Boers). Collected by 457 Sergeant Charles Edward Clews, 2nd New Zealand Mounted Rifles, No 3 Company. Charles Edward Clews enlisted for service with the 2nd Contingent New Zealand Mounted Rifles on 19th January 1900 and embarked on the Waiwera. He was wounded at Rhenoster Kop, Rietfontein, on 29th November 1900, during a battle in which four New Zealanders were killed and twenty one were wounded. Sergeant Clews completed his term of service in May-June 1901 and received medal clasps for Johannesburg, Cape Colony, Orange Free State and South Africa 1901. He died in Auckland on 9.6.1945. (ref.
