Title |
rim (interior) |
||
Description |
English: Pottery rim sherd with a stepped rim where the rounded edge is defined internally by a groove and flattened section before rising up slightly to meet the edge of the interior of the sherd. Similar stepped rims are illustrated in Manby (1999) on page 61, Table 6.2. The sherd is made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. The fabric has large inclusions of pale felspars and dark augite and is orangey-brown on the exterior and mid-brown on the interior of the sherd with black residue and a dark brown core. This 'mucky' gabbroic fabric and type of rim are seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).
T.G. Manby in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates a similar rim on a Grooved Ware vessel from Garton Slack in Yorkshire, on page 63, Fig.6.3, No.3. |
