English: Serviette Drawer and holder for Serviette Rings Made by Lionel Vernon Duffy while interned as a conscientious objecter, WW2 .1- small drawer unit; geometric inlays on lid; initial S inside diamond; two shallow slots for removable serviette ring holder, a wooden rod (with eight serviette rings) which fits into removable uprights; 4 small feet on base of drawer unit; drawer has lozenge shaped handle .2-.9- eight serviette rings decorated with inlaid wood Number of items- nine- drawer unit and eight serviette rings Number of parts (drawer unit)- x 5- drawer unit, removable drawer, ring holder uprights (x2), and rod .10 contents of drawer- assorted odds and ends. Notes Serviette drawer and ring holder – with 8 serviette rings Made by Lionel Vernon Duffy while interned as a conscientious objector during WW2. Contents of Serviette Box Although made as a serviette box, more recently it was used as an odds and ends drawer, contents as listed below- 5 used postage stamps (4 Australian, 1 NZ 30c stamp St John Ambulance Centenary 1885-1985) 2 rubber bands 1 pair tweezers 1 small pair scissors 2 nail files 1 eyedropper (rubber perished) 1 card with three grades of fuse wire 2 safety pins 1 safety razor blade 3 hairclips 1 ‘General’ ink and pencil eraser (made in Japan) 1 small dice 1 plastic toothpick with Maori ‘carved’ head at one end, with protective cover 1 piece of chalk 1 plastic pencil sharpener 5 coins- one shilling (1934), 2 sixpences (1947 and 1960) 2 threepences (1944 and 1960) 1 small piece of chain 5 keys- 2 luggage keys (pair) with cardboard tag – Pacific Sky-flite luggage 1 Key marked Dr Shoe, Glenfield mall 1 small key marked- BEDI - NO 5030 1 large cuphook 4 small cuphooks and 1 eyelet 2 paperclips 5 loose screws (asstd sizes) 2 small tacks 3 things 1 packet HHP ALDON screws 1 small white paper bag with two wall clips and three screws 1 manilla envelope (postmarked 18 Nov 1957) containing fine cord, envelope sealed closed 1 receipt from Bernina Sewing Centre, Rotorua, for repairs to a 708 model machine, dated 14.2.83 – full check, 1 ½ hrs at $12.00 per hour Lionel Duffy was a conscientious objector on religious grounds. He belonged to a religious group, the friends, known during WW2 by the name the Christian Assemblies. Lionel had joined this group in the late 1930s-early 1940s. H was sentenced to detention in May 1942 and spent time at Hautu and possibly other camps in the central North Island. His brother Colin received a similar sentence later that year. While in camp Lionel worked bush-clearing. In his leisure time he used pieces of wood found in the bush to create small domestic items, many featuring wood inlay. Some he used in camp, and other pieces were made as gifts. While in camp Lionel received visits from Violet Kingston who, with her parents Richard and May Kingston, would travel down by train.
