THE DIFFICULT PITCH IN THE QRERT GULLYCRRIQ Y CRE THE GREAT GULLY. CRAIG Y CAE 369 occupied us two hours, so we hastened upward tosee what lay ahead. A few steps brought us to a short obstacle iuthe form of a small chockstone wedged across thegully. It proved easy enough, and after sur-mounting it we found that at the next pitch thegully forked. We chose the left-hand branch,which consisted of a deeply cut chimney, up whichwe backed in orthodox fashion. Then the forkscoalesced, and the gully narrowed. The sceneryhereabouts was magnificent. Looking outwardand downward, the black depths of Llyn y Caecould be seen over the edge of the pitch wehad just ascended, and above rose the roughshoulders of Cader Idris. Thev were framedby the steep sides of the gully, Pencoed Pillaron our right receding from us in curtain aftercurtain of black perpendicular rock.
